Faith Ringgold

St. Nicholas Park
Harlem, NYC
2021
“Windows of the Wedding #1, Woman”

In Fall 2021, we honored legendary artist and activist Faith Ringgold with the design and launch of a permanent public basketball court in Harlem. Widely recognized for her painted story quilts and early oil paintings rooted in political struggle and personal narrative, Ringgold’s work has long bridged fine art and cultural history. This court brought her legacy into a new public dimension—embedding her visual language directly into the fabric of the neighborhood where her influence has long resonated.

To inaugurate the court, community partners Each One Teach One and Team Hunc led a youth basketball clinic for local kids, blending movement and mentorship. The day culminated in a high energy 3x3 men’s tournament that caught national attention, including a segment on ESPN’s Jalen & Jacoby. The court was featured in Architectural Digest as one of the ‘best designed courts’ in the world.

This activation celebrated Faith Ringgold’s contributions to American art and social justice, and reflected our mission to transform public spaces into a living canvases for history, joy, and collective impact.
